When does GST/HST registration become necessary?
For most businesses, the CRA’s small-supplier test uses a $30,000 threshold for worldwide taxable supplies, including associated persons where applicable. It considers both a single calendar quarter and the previous four consecutive calendar quarters. This is revenue, not profit after your supplies and other expenses.
The timing differs if you cross the threshold within one quarter versus across consecutive quarters. Read the CRA’s registration and charging rules before deciding which invoice should first include tax. Voluntary registration may also be possible.
What records help you monitor it?
Keep a running record of dated sales and retain invoices and expense receipts. Use a separate column for tax rather than treating it as spendable earnings. Check the calculation regularly instead of waiting until year-end.
If you have multiple business activities or associated businesses, ask an accountant how those supplies affect the test. Do not assume only cleaning income counts.
How should you explain a quote?
Make clear whether any applicable tax is included or added. Once you know your registration position, use consistent estimates, invoices and payment records so clients can understand the total.
The free pricing calculator deliberately calculates before tax; it does not decide your registration status or tax treatment. Use the CRA guide for registrants and professional advice for your circumstances.
